A lot of my work is often related to pixel art or video game graphics so it was a welcome change to be asked to do a book of illustrations and on a subject I have a genuine interest in. I am of course referring to the Kickstarter funded Colouring Book of Retro Computers in association with Neil @ RMC The Cave.
The approach I took was to take as many reference photos as possible of each machine. Some of the more obscure machines were quite hard to source so I had to rely on finding photos online for these.
The software I used as with all my digital illustration work is the excellent Krita, this software not only allowed me to create my own set of customs brushes it also allowed me to work very quickly too.
I had worked with Neil before during his first Kickstarter campaign for his Retro Tea Breaks Vol.1 Book, providing all the Pixel Portraits of the interviewees (including Neil and myself) for inclusion in the book. I was rather chuffed to be included in the book amongst such greats of the gaming industry. Drawing them was a lot of fun and with the backer portraits I ended up drawing over 70 pixel portraits!
